Dyslexia in detail

Reading, writing and spelling are Visual functions.

Yes, the words do represent a coded system for sounds, but gathering up the images of coded squiggles of ink off the page is a visual process, just as the conversion of a thought or idea into what squiggles of ink you want to write down on a page involves high degrees of Visualization. You need to be able to picture in your mind what the result of your movements with the pen will look like before the pen touches the page.

The written language is too recent a development for us to have genetically adapted to it. A person who is likely to be very skilled at fine-motor tasks like craftsmanship in the making of a spear point from flint is not necessarily going to be good with abstract representation codes. If they were born with optimal neural wiring to be craftsmen, they cannot easily change themselves to being good at decoding.

Now that society values skill with printed word, it can leave the child who is skilled with their hands out in the cold.

Language is a Visual function.

When one considers the purpose of the words and the purpose of language, it is to create a visual picture in the mind of the person you are communicating to so they can 'see what you mean'. The use of the printed words comes very late in man's evolution, we are a highly visual species.

"Look" at how many words we use are visual references "now see here", "I can't see what you are getting at"....."can you picture what I am getting at" ?

Dyslexia is to a large degree a Learning Related Visual Disability.

The anatomy supports this view point.

There are approximately       60,000 nerves from your ears

There are approximately 2,000,000 nerves from your eyes ( x35 times more than ears)

Evolution has spoken;  Vision is far more valuable than Hearing.

When you watch real-time brain scans of people receiving visual input, you can see the incredible level of activity throughout the whole brain, not just the visual cortex;

In the context of modern computer language, Vision is the Operating System !
